To study biochemical markers in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease patients
Journal Title: International Journal of Clinical Biochemistry and Research - Year 2018, Vol 5, Issue 4
Abstract
Introduction Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease COPD which includes chronic bronchitis and emphysema is considered as a progressive type of respiratory tract disease and is characterized by structural changes such as emphysema airflow limitation dynamic hyperinflation air trapping and peribronchial fibrotic remodeling of the lungs with significant systemic inflammatory components induced by chronic exposures to smoking andor occupational or environmental sourcesMaterials and Methods This case control study was conducted on 60 subjects in which 30 were healthy controls and 30 were cases of COPD Patients with history of respiratory disease other than COPD cardiac diseases and neuromuscular disease were excluded 30 healthy age and gender matched nonsmoker adults were selected as control groupResults Unpaired t test was performed and it was observed that Total Cholesterol Triglyceride Low Density Lipoprotein Lactate dehydrogenase levels were significantly higher and serum concentrations of High Density Lipoprotein was decreased significantly in cases as compared to controlsConclusion Serum LDH levels are altered in many respiratory diseases but it has not been studied in depth in COPD patients In view of this we conducted the study and our results shows that patients with COPD have raised serum LDH levelsKeywords Smoking COPD Lactate dehydrogenase

A comparative study of serum estrogen and lipid profile in pre-menopausal and post-menopausal women as atherosclerotic risk factors
Objectives: Menopause is the permanent cessation of menstruation; since cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death among post-menopausal women, which may be due to lower level of estrogen. The present study was...
Status of high sensitive C- reactive protein (hs-CRP) in NAFLD obese type-2 diabetic subjects
Introduction Non alcoholic fatty liver disease NAFLD is a disease occurring in patients without any significant alcohol consumption It includes a broad spectrum and advanced forms of liver diseases from simple steatosis...
A study to assess the iron status of regular blood donors
Blood transfusions save lives and improve health. The general impact of blood donation on iron status has been studied since the late 1970’s. Iron deficiency anemia is a common finding in regular blood donors. According...
Prevalence of metabolic syndrome in obese medical students –a case control study
Introduction: The Metabolic Syndrome is a constellation of risk factors predictive of future Cardio Vascular Accidents (CVA) and Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) in adults. Recently several studies revealed that metabolic...
Biochemical markers for early detection of cardiovascular disease in smokers
Introduction: The prevalence of coronary heart disease (CHD) is increasing in urban as well as rural areas in India especially during the last decade due to adoption of smoking habits. Tobacco smoking is currently ranked...
