Abstract
The aim — to evaluate the condition of the surface of intact occluders and its corrosion resistance in the experimental study of devices made of bzirconium alloy after prolonged stay in an animal’s body. Materials and methods. Investigation of occluders for corrosion resistance were conducted in vitro and when introduced into the bloodstream of pigs as a biological model. Samples of the surface of occluders were examined under light and raster electron microscopes initially and in 1, 3 and 6 months after implantation. Results and discussion. Histological examination of the surface of occluders in the area of their implantation and distal from it, in the background of activation of neointima and developing fibrosis, we revealed inclusions of granular and smallfragmented foreign material of black color. Moderate corrosion of the material was found during the microscopic examination of the surface of intact occluders. After the preliminary processing of the implantable products in the ultrasound bath, microscopically, the surface of the intact occluders was coated with an even thin layer of ZrTi oxide film, while the implantation of bzirconium devices in an animal’s body significantly decreased the number of foreign implants on the histological sections. Conclusions. During thermal treatment, a loose film of ZrTi oxide is formed on the surface of products of lowmodulus bzirconium alloy. During the implantation of occluders in an animal’s body, the particles of the oxide film can break away from the main material, migrate with the flow of blood and cause (intensify) the reaction to the introduction of an alien body. It has been shown that the previous combined ultrasonic and chemical cleansing of occluders makes it possible to obtain a smooth and relatively «clean» surface of the implantable products. Products of bzirconium alloy that underwent ultrasound processing and were implanted in the vessel lumen of the experimental animal do not cause excessive proliferation of intima around the elements of the device and more distantly from its localization.
