Tooth autotransplantation at the University in Oslo

Journal Title: Forum Ortodontyczne - Year 2009, Vol 5, Issue 2

Abstract

In 1960’s professor in orthodontics Olav Slagsvold and dental surgeon doctor Bjorn Bjercke had introduced a method of autogenous transplantation of developing premolars in patients with missing teeth. They had performed more than 100 transplantations until the end of 1970’s and had published several articles describing the indications and shortterm results. Currently, it is a method routinely used at the Orthodontic Department of the University in Oslo in growing patients with missing teeth and presenting orthodontic indications for premolar transplantation. The survival rate of autotransplanted premolars is more than 90% including teeth transplanted to maxillary anterior region. Long-term observations (20-40 years) of autotransplanted premolars had shown the predictability of this method and documented the preservation of the alveolar bone during growth after premolar transplantation.
