Torrefaction as a Means to Increase the use of Solid Biomass for Power Generation and Heating
Journal Title: Acta Energetica - Year 2016, Vol 27, Issue 2
Abstract
A technical constraint of the use of solid biomass in high power pulverized coal boilers is the clear divergence of physiochemical properties of this type of fuel compared to boiler coal. It implies coal units’ operating restrictions that affect demand from the power generation sector, which should be an important partner for agriculture and forestry. Biomass’ utility may be improved by its prior valorisation. This paper compares the physiochemical properties of solid products of the torrefaction process, which essentially consists in the thermal (200–300oC) treatment of a raw fuel in an inert atmosphere (e.g. pure nitrogen). Some selected operating parameters of hard coal and lignite, solid biomass (first and second generation) and biochar, a fuel qualitatively similar to low-rank coal, are analysed.
