Abstract

In the beginning, positivist-based empirical and determinist approaches have analyzed the text as the elements of sentence. The methods as semiotics and semantics stemmed from these approaches have been effective in describing the text but inadequate in understanding and comprehending the aesthetic spirit in the text. Social spirit has an important role in the process of creating a text. One of the most important sources in examining a literary text, but not being fully analyzed, is the social and political conditions of the period. Thus, the separate evaluation of the text from the context of the art history will undoubtedly be a serious blindness. As seen, this era is a period in which literature and especially literary criticism has made a serious development, aesthetic concerns have reached the most sensitive level, art has been seen as the center. In this study, we will scrutinize the imagery that reflects the period’s understanding of art and literature in the two stories of Uşaklıgil, one of the most important names of “Edebiyat-ı Cedide”, as Tanpınar said, one of the pioneers of this period and also the last of this generation by his age.
