Abstract
Due to the popularity of the concept of elite we believe that its analysis in explanatory dictionaries and in author’s concepts of researchers of various fields is relevant. This concept has changed since its initial understanding. It was originally used to refer to the best plant varieties or animal species. Thereafter it began to characterize individuals or groups that were on the top of the social hierarchy. Later it actively operates in socio-political sphere. In order to clarify the dynamics of the semantic development of the word, the author covers issues related to understanding of elite in sociology, philosophy and pedagogy from the perspective of different scientific approaches. The concept of elite in relation to a human is reduced to four types. A change in the semantics of words elite (n), elite (adj) and elitist in accordance with their functioning in different contexts is also noticed. The characteristic features of the modern elite are determined.
