TRANSFORMATION OF ARCHAIC GENRE FORMS IN YURI SHCHERBAK'S TRILOGY

Abstract

Purpose: genre analysis of contemporary works of Yuri Shcherbak's trilogy "Chas smertokhrystiv", "Chas velikoi gry", "Chas tyrana" in terms of transforming archaic genre traditions. Carnival rites, Bible rites, connecting the sacred and profane in intellectual novel allow us to analyze dystopia trilogy more extensively. Methodology. The study is based on the critical works written by M.Bakhtin about the origins of poliphonic novel and N.Kozachyk's researches in ukrainian intellectual prose. There are many views in literary-theoretical discourse about individual genre of Shcherbak's trilogy. V.Skurativsky told about carnival traditions and signs of menippeya in trilogy. T.Bovsunivska researched features of genre in Shcherbak's post-apocalyptic prose. All these researches complement the holistic picture of Shcherbak's individual genre. Findings. The analysis of the Yury Shcherbak's trilogy proved that polyphonic intellectual novel bears menippea signs such as the appearance of the hero-double, altered states of consciousness, connection sacred and profane, religious subjects. Trilogy-menippea is presented by dystopia genre. Originality/value. At this period, the study of Y. Shcherbak's creativity is fragmented, this study examines the origins of the genre of the novel and intellectual transformation of carnival rituals in contemporary literature on the example of the trilogy. The study of archaic genre traditions allows us to connect the "memory of the genre" with the individual style of the writer. It is a very useful source of information for determinating the characteristics of the dystopia genre and futurology, which are not quite common in modern Ukrainian literature.
