Journal Title: IOSR Journal of Dental and Medical Sciences (IOSR-JDMS) - Year 2018, Vol 17, Issue 9

Abstract

Ocular trauma is common in ophthalmic emergencies. Their occurence in children complicates the prognosis and management because of the risk of amblyopia and difficult clinical examination. The purpose of this study is to analyze the different epidemiological, clinical and therapeutic aspects of this affection in order to establish better management. This is a retrospective study of 123 patients with complicated ocular trauma, admitted to the Pediatric Ophthalmology Department of the Casablanca University Hospital over a period of 48 months. The average age of the children was 7.5 years (4-15 years) with a clear male predominance (80% of the cases). The dominant mechanism was the projection of blunt objects, especially stone throwing (45% of cases). Ophthalmological examination found initial visual acuity less than 1/10 in 75.4% of cases. The lesions of the anterior segment dominated by hyphema (52%), high ocular pressure (52%) and posttraumatic cataract (51%). Posterior segment injury was associated in 28.5% of cases. If not managed sufficiently early and appropriate, these lesions may cause definitive partial loss of vision or blindness. The establishment of effective awareness and prevention programs is essential to reduce their frequency and severity.
