Treatment of mandibular fractures – review of methodsfrom antiquity to the present

Journal Title: Journal of Stomatology (Czasopismo Stomatologiczne) - Year 2009, Vol 62, Issue 12

Abstract

Introduction: A variety of injuries have always accompanied the progress of civilization, consequences of which people had to deal with. Aim of the study: To describe procedures in the treatment of fractures of the lower jaw from ancient times to the present day on the basis of literature and own experience. Discussion: Mandibular fractures were already treated in antiquity. It was Hippocrates who observed the possibility of involving the patient’s teeth in the treatment of fractured jaws. Such modus operandi established by Hippocrates was in use until modern times. In the 19th century, orthopedic and conservative methods in the treatment of jaw fractures were routinely applied. Introduction of general anesthesia by William Morton in 1846, forever changed the face of surgery. Although the firstattemptsatosteosynthesiswereperformedbythe end of the 19th century, it was more than 50 years later that Bigelow described the screws and plates made of an alloy of cobalt-chromium-molybdenum (vitallium) for osteosynthesis. This gave rise to modern surgical methods of repositioning and osteosynthesis of fractured jaw fragments. Conclusion: Research will continue to introduce better and more reliable methods of treatment of mandibular fractures. With the development of material engineering and computer technology, microplates and instrumentation used for ostheosynthesis of the lower jaw fracture are being
