Treatment of visceral and renal aneurysms with endovascular methods
Journal Title: Postępy Nauk Medycznych - Year 2012, Vol 25, Issue 5
Abstract
Introduction. Visceral and renal arteryaneurysmseven though they are rarevascular pathology (frequency of appearing of visceral aneurysms 0.1-2%, renal 0.01-0.09% of the human population), they constitute a considerable risk for the life (the mortality rate fluctuates from 10 up to the 25%). For many years a surgical procedure was an only possibility of aneurysms treatment. Currently, with the development ofen dovascular techniques, there is a possibility to percutaneous embolization of aneurysms or implantation of covered stents with excluded aneurysm from the circulation. The aim ofthis study was toanalyzeover 10 years experiencein the endovascular treatment ofvisceral and renal aneurysms, presenting the possibility and the assessment of effectiveness of this procedure.
Material and methods. Between January 2000 and December 2011, 40 patients with VAAs (aged 23-79 years) and 25 patients with RAAs (aged 27-60) underwent endovascular treatment. Different techniques were used: 28 aneurysms were embolised with coils, covered stents were implanted in 27 patients, in 8 cases transcatheter direct thrombin injection into the sack of the aneurysm was implemented andin 2 patients with ruptured visceral aneurysm mixed technique was applied.
Results. Almost all aneurysms (63/65) were successfully excluded from the circulation. Follow-up examinations with Doppler USG or angio-CT were performed in 61 patients between 1 and 18 months after treatment. No reperfusion of aneurysmal sac was observed in any of the followed-up patients.
Conclusions. During a fast growth of endovascular techniques, our long-term experience in treatment of visceral and renal aneurysms shows that they are effective and safe. Endovacular treatment of aneurysms should be considered as one of therapeutic options, however we should remember that good treatment results depend on proper assessment of the aneurysm’s morphology by means of angio-CT or angiography as well as on selection of the appropriate vascular approach and endovascular technique.

Flow-diverters in endovascular treatment of unruptured brain aneurysm
Endovascular techniques of brain aneurysms treatment developed significantly during past decades. The traditional coiling approach was extended by use of stents or occlusion balloons. A new treatment philosophy was also...
