TRIBOCHEMICAL MODIFICATION OF THE SURFACE LAYER OF MAGNESIUM ALLOY AZ 31 COUNTERFACE WEARING AGAINST ELASTOMER CONTAINING SULPHUR AND CHLORINE

Journal Title: Tribologia - Year 2009, Vol 224, Issue 2

Abstract

The degree of surface modification of AZ magnesium alloy after extensive friction against chlorosulfonated polyethylene, plastified poly(vinyl chloride), ebonite, sulphur vulcanizate of styrenebutadiene rubber, polysulphone and polysulphuric rubber, has been studied. TOF – SIMS spectra confirmed the transfer of S-, Cl- and macromolecular chain fragments containing these ions to the surface layer of metal counterface; whereas, confocal Raman microscopy was able to reveal only some oxides and an unidentified hydrocarbon species. The influence of tribochemical modification on the tribological characteristics of polymer – metal friction pairs is presented.
