TRINITARIAN TERMINOLOGY IN CONTEMPORARY THEOLOGY
Journal Title: Науковий вісник НУБіП України. Серія: Гуманітарні студії - Year 2018, Vol 1, Issue 295
Abstract
The doctrine of the Trinity is the key doctrine of the Christian church. In theological discussions of the third and fourth centuries, the Fathers of the Church created a Trinitarian terminology that was understandable in their times and became normative in the Christian theology of the main Christian confessions. However, in the modern language environment, the Trinitarian terms used by the Fathers have undergone certain semantic changes. The article discusses the substantial terminology that the Fathers used to describe the unity of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit and personalistic terminology to define divine Persons. An analysis of substantive terminology shows that the best way is to represent the divine essence in apophatic terms. The personalistic terminology of the Trinitarian theology of the Fathers can be ambiguously perceived in the modern language environment. However, if it is presented in terms of the classical understanding of personality, then it becomes relevant and correctly conveys the original intentions of the authors of the Trinitarian doctrine.
