Abstract

Introduction: Complications of acute otitis media have decreased in frequency because of the broad use of antibiotics. On the other hand, antimicrobial agents may sometimes not prevent the complication but only obscure the presentations making the signs and symptoms less obvious. In latent mastoiditis, the patient typically lacks the classic symptoms and the tympanic membrane can seem to be normal if the middle-ear infection has resolved but there is an obstruction of the aditus ad antrum. At this stage, the infection can develop into another intratemporal or intracranial complications. Case report: A long way to establish the diagnosis of latent mastoiditis in 32-year-old woman is described. Conclu sions: Although relatively uncommon, latent mastoiditis still remains one of the potential consequences of otitis media. Myringotomy, tympanostomy tube insertion or mastoidectomy with large facial recess approach to middle ear have to be considered to prevent further possible complications.
