Abstract

After The World War II, Turkey has adopted a number of policies because of West and USSR factor. During this period, Turkey’s main aim has been to enter into the Western system. In this context, Turkey became a member of NATO. After becoming a member of NATO, Turkey has made mission itself to apply Western policies in the Middle East. Turkey's move in this perspective gave rise to the deterioration of relations with Arab states that want to get rid of the western states. Arab states, after World War II, have been seeking to expel England which is an imperialist Western power from their country to gain total independence. England has produced policies to protect strategic military bases in the Middle East. Problems have started to show between Turkey and Arab states because of Turkey’s support to these policies. All of these events, the two superpowers USA and USSR also entered to the region. USA and USSR have tried to fill the gap left by the removal of England. In events of Arab-Israeli War, the Middle East Command project, the Baghdad Pact and the Suez Crisis; relations between Turkey and Arab States have gone through in opposite directions. In these events, Turkey and Arab states come indirectly faced. However, after these events, during the 1957 Syrian Crisis, Turkey and Syria which is one of Arab states have come directly faced. While Turkey adopted policies with USA, Syria adopted policies with USSR. This article focuses on understanding relations between Turkey and generally Arab states in the Middle East and specially Syria with the 1957 Syrian Crisis.
