Chekhov “Thick and thin” (1883 and 1886) the author traces the transformation of the initial creative intentions, defines the offset of the axiological points of figurative system, detects changes in semantics of Chekhov’s text. In the framework of the “point chronotope” the author of the article interprets the meaning of the title “Thick and thin”, shows a shift inside the title of the story. The author pays special attention to the poetics of repetition – composite, situational, rhetorical and stylistic symmetry in the text. The author shows that Chekhov exploits the repetition in the short story. The article establishes the connection with the previous literary tradition of depicting the “thick and thin”, in particular with the works of N. Gogol. The author emphasizes that the young Chekhov in the early comic sketch went beyond the established classical tradition. In this way the writer moved from the irony of the joke (the genre of the anecdote) to the philosophy of the narrative.
