Journal Title: Kocatepe Medical Journal - Year 2024, Vol 25, Issue 3

Abstract

OBJECTIVE: Asthma is one of the most common diseases affecting the respiratory system. It severely impacts the functionality of individuals as it leads to a significant decrease in the quality of life. Due to the high prevalence of this disease and its impact on the functionality of individuals, we aimed to investigate its psychosocial characteristics. MATERIAL AND METHODS: One hundred consecutive outpatients with a diagnosis of asthma who were followed up in the outpatient clinic of chest diseases were included in the study. One hundred volunteer controls were matched with the patient group for age, gender, and marital status. Sociodemographic data form, Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI), Somatosensory Amplification Scale (SSAS), and Type D Personality Scale (DS-14) were applied to each subject. The statistical significance level was accepted as p<0.05. RESULTS: No statistically significant difference was found between the patient and control groups regarding age, marital status, educational status, gender, and employment status, which were among the sociodemographic data investigated in our study. A significant difference was found between the groups for all scales except DS-14 when the scores obtained from the BDI, BAI, SAS, and DS-14 scales were compared between the two groups. CONCLUSIONS: We found that anxiety-depressive symptoms were more prevalent in the asthma group, Type D personality was more prevalent and the scores for somatosensory amplification were higher. We believe that patients diagnosed with asthma should be examined by a psychiatrist, and psychiatric symptoms should be investigated, in order to improve their quality of life and reduce the economic cost of unnecessary examinations.
