Ukrainian Antarctic station «Akademik Vernadsky» (based on the exhibition «Ukrainian Antarctica» from the collection of the National Museum of History of Ukraine and the National Museum of Natural Sciences of Ukraine)

Abstract

Article based on fund collection of the National Museum of History of Ukraine and the National Museum of Natural History, National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine highlighted the history of Ukraine as a state of the Antarctic. An important topic of Ukrainian history – the opening of Ukrainian Antarctic station «Akademik Vernadsky» was investigated. An attempt a comprehensive study of Antarctic station «Akademik Vernadsky» implemented. 9 February 2016, to the 20th anniversary of the opening of the station «Academik Vernadsky» employees of National Museum of Ukraine prepared the exhibition «Ukrainian Antarctica». The aim of the exhibition was to show the features of British and Ukrainian polar explorers, reveal their scientific work and contribution of Ukrainian scientists in Antarctic research. Scientific novelty lies in the formulation and development of topical subject that has not received full coverage in the modern historical scholarship. The article documented history of the real-exhibition «Ukrainian Antarctica» and its importance for Ukrainian science. Deals with a range of measures, which were held at the National Museum of History of Ukraine Ukrainian research on polar expeditions to Antarctica. The exhibition draws attention to the highly topical theme – the activities of Ukrainian scientists and polar explorers who continuously conducting for 20 years with limited funding and helping Ukraine to win the right to claim the huge natural resources of Antarctica.
