“UKRAINIAN ISSUE” IN THE CHURCH IN NEWSPAPER “BUKOVYNA” REVIEW (1885–1910)

Abstract
The aim of this article is to find out the relationship of religious process in Bukovyna with self-defense of the Ukrainians in the region above the prism of newspaper “Bukovyna” (1885–1909 years.). The materials on religious issues were analyzed, which the existing national component in the Church, defines what themes were often described in these articles, and what consequences of religious conflicts had to the public. A total Romanization of church was a reason why newspaper “Bucovyna” discussed the problem of the division of the Orthodox diocese into the Ukrainian and Romanian ones, but the desire of pro-Ukrainian activists has not been implemented. The problem of the Ukrainian language oppression in the Orthodox Church also considered. Overall newspaper “Bucovyna” took an active part in covering the religious situation influenced by self-defense factors and contributed to the formation of the national consciousness of the population. As a result “Bukovyna” determined the role of church in the nation formation and often is taken as an ex-ample of the division of diocese. The Ukrainian intelligence tried to explain people what means “nation” and “religion”. Because of this opponents accused newspaper in commitment of Greek Catholics, especially in the context of populist movements. For the first time the article systematically analyzes religion issue in newspaper “Bucovyna” and helps to understand the processes in the Orthodox Church. The results of the research help to understand the importance of the newspapers influence on the people and the Church.
