Ultrastructural view of dental surface in Dentinogenesis imperfecta type II in a young adult

Journal Title: Journal of Stomatology (Czasopismo Stomatologiczne) - Year 2013, Vol 66, Issue 4

Abstract

Introduction. Dentinogenesis imperfecta is an autosomal dominant disorder. It is characterized by opalescent colour of teeth. Clinically, the crowns of teeth with Dentinogenesis imperfecta type II (DI-II) become rapidly damaged. Aim of the study. To present investigation results using SEM (Scanning Electron Microscope) in order to define the character of dental surface with DI-II and prosthetic rehabilitation of a 20-year-old girl. Material and methods. Material of the study consisted of the lower molar extracted due to periapical infection with clinical diagnosis of DI-II. After preparation, the tooth was examined in SEM. Results. Examination of the surface of the crown showed two small pieces of enamel. The exposed dentine was generally uneven, although in some places smooth, in other places with craters and depressions of varying depths. In the cervical area, cracking and separation of a fragment of enamel was also visible as well as a strongly anchored mass of fiber bundles. Conclusion. Cracks, crevices and cavities with highly irregular surface were present on the surface of the tooth with DI -II. Due to the condition of the surface upper and lower overdentures were applied.
