UNDERWATER ARCHAEOLOGICAL RESEARCH OF THE ALLEGED NAVIGATION BARRIER FROM VIII[sup]th[/sup] CENTURY IN SCHLEI BAY,[sup][/sup] GERMANY

Abstract
In 1992 year Ph. Dr Willi Kramer beggined first systematical archaeological underwater reserch in North Germany (Land Schleswig-Holstein). Discovered remains of the construction are called navigation barrier. First wooden beams were taken at the time of underwater prospection. After dendrochronological analise was known that trees were cuted in years 730/740. In this moment was beggined researches with using of the sonars. In summer 1995 year was started systematical underwater excavation of the construction so-called Kastenbauwerk. During three months, was digged ca. 25 m[sup]2[/sup] to 1 m deep. Discovered construction was build from the box ca. 5 × 5 m. Perhaps construction found in Schlei Bay shall be a part of the fortification system so-called Danewerk, which was localisated near Schleswig. Function of this construction is not clear. It’s possible that this barrier(?) protected the port or trade against the ways.
