Universıty and its Social Environments: Nigde University and Nigde

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to deal with the relationships between employees (academic and non-academic) and students and their relationships with social environments (e.g., people in a city where the university was founded) in a relatively recent “new universities.” There were a very limited number of the studies on the topic in question. Data obtained from employees (academic and non-academic) and students in Nigde University and tradespeople in the cities of Nigde, Bor, and Ulukisla (N= 1.553). The respondents were selected by using a random sample of students, an availability sample of the shop owners, and a whole population of the academic and non-academic staffs. The findings showed a transition toward a better university; satisfaction with the present rector; lack of constructions of school buildings, educational tools, and social activities; not having politics at university; not seeing university as an economic commodity; lack of social activities at the social environments; a low or medium level universityindustry relationships; great contribution of the university to its social surroundings; and the Nigde people’s lack of donation to the university.
