Urartu Skeletons And Fixing Of Sex In Altintepe

Journal Title: The Journal of International Social Research - Year 2008, Vol 1, Issue 3

Abstract

It is quite difficult to determine sex in human beings based on milk and permanent teeth. While they show variances from society to society under the pressure of natural selection over the time, the fact that teeth of male individuals are somewhat larger than female individuals is known from the anthropological studies. In order for the gender determination be successful, multiple analyses must be carried out by finding as whole a skeleton as possible. However in case there is no remainder other than teeth of a skeleton, teeth measurements are inevitable. Despite the fact that there are differences between the societies, crown breadth of the lower canines of adult female and male skeletons can allow determining the gender. Dimensions of the isolated lower canines found in Altıntepe mass graves which were dated back to Urarthu era, generally allowed determining gender distribution.
