URBAN COMMUNITY IN CRISIS? Identity and Belonging to the City in the Era of Globalisation

Abstract
This article considers selected concepts of urban identity and belonging in the era of globalisation. In the contemporary urban sociology we can find numerous statements supporting the thesis on disembeddedness of economic, social and cultural relationships from the space context. Globalisation significantly affects urban culture as well, including social identity, life styles and phenomena of cultural differentiation and hybridisation. More often than ever before, urban identities are becoming a result of local and cosmopolitan interplay. Belonging to a place comprises a good background for the creation of “new tribes” which are particular communities based on shared interests going beyond classes, cultural or geographical boundaries. The acceptance for many different “villages” giving the sense of embeddedness and belonging is becoming a challenge for contemporaneity.<br/><br/>
