Use of laser irradiation as a method supporting orthodontic treatment – preliminary reports
Journal Title: Forum Ortodontyczne - Year 2017, Vol 13, Issue 4
Abstract
Laser irradiation based on biostimulation is a modern therapeutic method that is commonly used in many fields of medicine. This therapeutic protocol can be comprehensively used thanks to a wide range of emitted light and its various properties. Therefore the effects of laser therapy on tooth migration in the course of orthodontic treatment were studied. So far, only few teams studied this subject, and conclusions from studies performed are ambiguous. Aim. An analysis of published papers regarding possible application of laser therapy in order to accelerate orthodontic treatment. Presentation of biostimulation protocols used in studies and stages of orthodontic treatment where low-level laser therapy can be used. Material and methods. Material included literature available in the PubMed electronic database published in the period 2008–2017. The following key words entered in various configurations were a search criterion: LLLT, orthodontic, laser, biostimulation. Results obtained were subject to a subject analysis. Only original papers based on in vivo studies, performed under clinical conditions were selected. Results. Search criteria were finally met by eight research papers published in 2008–2017. Conclusions from five studies confirmed applicability of biostimulation in the course of orthodontic treatment. Conclusions. Due to a low number of publications and discrepancies between results of studies published so far it is not possible to unequivocally determine the applicability of LLLT as a supporting method during orthodontic treatment. It is recommended to pursue further studies in this subject to study relationships between emission of low-energy electromagnetic radiation and tooth migration. (Prażmo E, Mielczarek A.
