Journal Title: Kocatepe Medical Journal - Year 2021, Vol 2, Issue 22
Abstract
OBJECTIVE: The interest of people is increasing in complementary and alternative medicine methods in the world and our country day by day. Generally, herbal products and food supplements are the most used methods by patients. The use of these products is also frequently preferred in diabetes patients. The use of herbal products or other methods may pose a risk in terms of morbidity and mortality in these patients. The present study aimed to investigate the use of herbal supplements in diabetic patients as well as the methods of administration and the side effects of the products. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This descriptive and cross-sectional study was carried out by conducting face-to-face interviews with 569 patients diagnosed with diabetes mellitus and followed up. The interviews were conducted with the volunteer patients aged between 18 and 90 and admitted to the Balıkesir University Hospital Internal Medicine Polyclinic between February 2020 and March 2020. RESULTS: In this study, 233 (40.9%) of diabetes patients who participated in the study were male; 336 (59.1%) of them were female. When the Diabetes mellitus (DM) patients participating in the study were questioned whether they had used any non-medical herbal products or other methods for their diseases, 366 (64.3%) of them stated that they had not used herbal products or other methods, while 203 (35.7%) stated that they had used it. The majority of the patients (N=174; 85.7%) using herbal products or other methods stated that they had used food supplements. Those who used food supplements most frequently had used foods such as cinnamon (60.2%) and lemon (11.4%). 156 (76.8%) of the patients stated that they had not informed their physicians about the herbal product or other methods used. Only 3% of users had side effects. CONCLUSIONS: Most patients with diabetes use non-medicinal herbal products, food supplements or other methods. It was seen that most of the participants did not inform their physicians about the methods they used. This situation can cause undesirable results. Therefore, physicians should be careful in terms of drug questioning the anamnesis section.
