UTILIZATION OF BIODEGRADABLE FOOD WASTE

Abstract
Biodegradable waste forms a significant part (> 60 %) of the total waste generated in the settlements. Food waste as well as other bio-waste have the property of degrading naturally, biologically. Bulgaria has undertaken the commitment by December 31, 2020 at the latest, to reduce the amount of biodegradable municipal waste disposed to 35 per cent of the total amount generated in the Republic of Bulgaria in 1995, which means 786 625t biodegradable waste or approximately 109 kg / person. With an appropriate method of treatment, such as composting, they could become a useful product, recovering valuable nutrients in the natural cycle, along with helping to preserve the capacity of landfills and reduce their greenhouse gas emissions [Poincelot Raymond 1975, Chongrak Polprasert 2007, 2007a]
