Abstract

The Decree of the President of Ukraine «On the measures on the commemoration of the centenary of the Ukrainian Revolution of 1917-1921» foresees the memorialization of its prominent figures. Valentyn Dmytrovych Otamanovsky, one of the founders of the Ukrainian Central Rada and its armed forces, a hero of the battle under Kruty, a famous social and political leader, and later, a prominent scientist, a finder of a wide hu-manitarian, practical and encyclopedic range – a local and landmark historian, a scholar in the field of history and jurisprudence of the domestic towns of the medieval period, history of the medicine and pharmacy, a historian of sci-ence, a bibliographer, a publisher, a translator and a polyglot, a man of letters, a teacher, an organizer of science, an educator, Doctor of Historical Sciences, belongs to the cohort of the prominent figures of the Ukrainian Revolution. The Ukrainian historical science calls Valentyn Otamanovsky a mastermind of the «Fraternity of Independentists», founded back in 1914 in Warsaw. This organization initiated the founding of the Ukrainian Central Rada 2, on 15 March 1917. V. Otamanovsky played a key role in the formation of the domestic national military groups. At the initiative of V. Otamanovsky, the headquarters of the Ukrainian policy, the first cavalry hundred, the association «Ukrainian military club named after hetman P.Polubotok», military club «Batkivshchyna» were founded in Kiev on 15 March 1917. In April 1917, V. Otamanovsky began to publish patriotic literature in the publishing house «Vernygora». Otamanovsky welcomed ardently the proclamation of the Ukrainian National Republic, yet he was disappointed with the absence of Ukrainian independence. On 16 (29) January 1918 V. Otamanovsky together with the student sub-division took part in the notorious battle against Bolshevist groups under Kruty. After the battle under Kruty, it oc-curred to Otamanovsky to write a composition for the youth «Son of Ukraine», under the pseudonym Val. Zlotopolets. There were some discussions regarding the authorship of this composition, as there is a false version of the composition co-authored by I. Phediv. Owing to reconnaissance, it was proved that the idea of the composition as well as the first «Viennese» version belonged to V. Otamanovsky. The Hetman Revolution disappointed Valentyn Otamanovsky, who had formed as a socialist by that time. Valentyn Otamanovsky very soon lost the rest of the hope regarding national aspirations of the Hetman government of Pavlo Skoropadsky. After that, V. Otamanovsky moved to Vienna where he rethought his attitudes and accepted the coopera-tion with the Soviet Government.
