Validation of a new pedal sensor to measure torque, power and work during pedaling.
Journal Title: Journal of Science and Cycling - Year 2016, Vol 5, Issue 2
Abstract
In the field of biomechanical analysis of pedaling motion, researchers studied the relationship between cost energy and cycling technique for optimal use of the force applied to the pedals, to improve cycling velocity for minimal energy cost or to compute the joint powers according to the resistive load. For that, numerous measuring devices have been developed and investigated to evaluate resultant torque and/or power output. Recently, new pedal sensors I-Crankset (ICS) are sold to measure the forces applied to the pedals and to calculate the torque and/or power output produced during cycling. These pedals’ sensors were calibrated and certificated, but it was essential to check if these devices still measured accurately after their integration on an ergometer.

Comparing time-trial and time to exhaustion performance
Introduction: Time to exhaustion trials (TTE) at a fixed exercise intensity have been widely used in a laboratory setting to measure endurance performance. However, they have been criticised for lacking ecological validi...
Thermoregulation during incremental exercise in masters cycling
This article follows a recently published work (Bertucci et al. 2012) on the effects of age on observed asymmetry during the mechanical process of pedaling for masters cyclists who concern the majority of practitioners....
A quantitative flow visualization technique for on-site sport aerodynamics optimization
Aerodynamics plays a crucial role in cycling as in many other speed sports. Aerodynamic investigation is required primarily for two reasons: 1. Optimization of the athletes’ posture and equipment geometry (e.g. bicycl...
Physiological and performance characteristics of road, mountain bike and BMX cyclists
The purpose of this research was to quantify several physiological and power output characteristics of high-performance road, cross-country mountain bike (XCMB), downhill mountain bike (DHMB) and bicycle motocross (BMX)...
The effect of aerodynamic characteristics on the drafting effect in track cycling
Since the aim of the men’s team pursuit is to accomplish a distance of 4000m as fast as possible, reducing aerodynamic drag by means of drafting can attribute in achieving this goal. Broker et al.1 quantified the average...
