Abstract

(At the Intersection of Realities) Published by Magyar Művészeti Akadémia [Hungarian Academy of Arts], Tóth Péter Pál’s monograph entitled The Gulyás Brothers off ers a comprehensive account of the life and work of the Gyula Gulyás and János Gulyás, key fi gures of Hungarian documentary cinema. The Gulyás brothers created dozens of epoch-making and unfl inching documentaries, including both cinematic sociographies in Hungary and fi lms shot secretly in Transylvania. Tóth Péter Pál explores, in a chronological manner, fi lms which refl ected upon the anomalies of an oppressive political regime, and – at the same time – introduces their makers’ unique creative methods both in their collaborative period and their individual works.
