VALUABLE ORIENTATIONS OF THE YOUTH ASSOCIATION OF ENGLISH AND AMERICAN SOCIETY

Abstract

The article is devoted to the research of valuable priorities of young English people and Americans. The work is based on the novel of a modern English writer Jojo Moyes «Me Before You» and the American writer E. L. James «50 Shades of Grey». Both novels were published in 2012 and feelings and emotions of the characters represent contemporary life in these countries. Valuable priorities of the main characters in the novels are researched judging by their language. British and American variants of the Eng-lish language are learned from the viewpoint of their emotional coloring. The novels under consideration are first of all love stories that is why in the centre of the writers’ attention is the development of love affairs between the young people representing English and American subculture. All events in the novels are taking place on the background of everyday life of people in a small English town («Me Before You») or a university campus and the city of Seattle, USA. («50 Shades of Grey»). The youth subculture is represented as an integral part of general existence of a community in each of these two countries. The author of the article gives definitions of the notion»value» as it is understood in different sciences: philosophy, sociology, psychology, pedagogy, linguistics etc. She researches the valuable priorities of the young people in love and groups their values according to some types worked out by famous scientists. All in all they are fifteen: moral, social, aesthetic, emotional, imperative, life providing, adverbial, communicative, personal, material, religious, magic, sexual, mental, political. Such values as benefit, choice, freedom, kindness, friendship, love, respect, gratitude, truth, help, care, honour are on the first place. Among the most valua-ble priorities there are also home, family, wealth, money, work, business, conscience, loyalty, intimacy, knowledge, luck, belief, joy, happiness. They reflect the young people’s attitude towards themselves, surrounding community, environment and love. As the result of the research the author of the article comes to the conclusion that valuable priorities of the young people in Great Britain and the USA are almost the same. The difference lies in the attitude to each other in love affairs. In Britain young people more value spiritual verbal communication while young Americans give priority to physical contacts and intimacy. The novel of Jojo Moyes is full of reflections, meditation, hesitation, inner thoughts while in «50 Shades of Grey» actions prevail. It is necessary to note that both novels under consideration are written by women and respectively they express feelings and emo-tions characteristic of their viewpoint and women’s assessment of the events. Both novels have their continuations «Me After You» and «50 Shades of Dark». In further researches it would be interesting to research the changes in the scale of the main characters’ valuable priorities. Clearing out men’s attitude to valuable priorities of young Englishmen and Americans in these countries is also worth researching.
