Journal Title: International Journal of Interdisciplinary and Multidisciplinary Studies (IJIMS) - Year 2014, Vol 1, Issue 8
Abstract
Renowned critic Narayan Choudhury called Manmatha Roy as a perfect successor of Dinabandhu Mitra. It's true that after Rabindranath Tagore, the anti-imperialist tradition in drama was bear by Manmatha Roy alone and the consummation of his social judgment in this regard was really taken for an instant. Dramatist Utpal Dutta has also mentioned that Roy was able to reach from classic to modernity in Bengali Drama from the judgment of our hearts. In the real sense, Manmatha Roy himself was an era in Modern Bengali Drama. For nearly eighty years, he wrote and worked. He was the creator of Bengali one act play also. In 'Karagar' and 'Mahabharati' he was hard enough to hit the British ruler against their inhumane rule. In 'Mirkasim', 'Ashok', 'Chand Saudagar' and many other plays he has showed the same attitude of patriotism towards country. Following the intensity of his dramatic movement, when he was on a hunger strike in Presidency jail, Rabindranath redeem him and said ' Give up hunger strike, our literature claims you.' In this paper I have expressed myself for a judgement from the tradition to modernity of various playwrights as well as Manmatha Roy and tried to promote the episode, which is nearly compatible with modern trend in Bengali Drama of today and that is one of our most important legacy and excellence.
