Vector Quantization – A Comprehensive Study

Abstract

Exploitation of redundancy of message can be done in two ways, one by considering the samples of message separately and second, considering the samples of message as blocks. The second way is found to be more effective for both lossy and lossless compression applications. Vector quantization is a way of coding the message by forming blocks systematically. The vector quantization is being used to code speech, image and video multimedia data. The aim of this paper is to present the concept of vector quantization, significance of vector quantization as compared to that of scalar quantization and different variations of vector quantization algorithms. Different variations of vector quantization schemes are presented along with their capability and limitations.
