Veni Creator op. 103 and Sonate de Requiem op. 283 for cello and piano by Olivier Greif, i.e., homo musicus in search of the total form

Journal Title: Notes Muzyczny - Year 2015, Vol 1, Issue 3

Abstract

The article was written on the basis of the interpretation issues its author came across while preparing for the Polish first performance of Veni Creator and the second premiere of Sonate de Requiem (the first one took place in Warsaw in 1993), the pieces for cello and piano by Olivier Greif, French composer of Polish and Jewish descent. The author attempts to outline some aspects of the unique personality of the creator whose compositions cannot be unambiguously assigned to specific genres of the 20th century music. In his pieces Greif used obsessive motives, quotations and self-quotations, blue notes, or inspirations by Indian raga, thanks to which he created a musical story uniting the past and the future and expressing the moments of passing away and achieving eternity. The composer used the golden proportion based on number ratio. His works are characterized by specific performance difficulties and they pose a great challenge for the skills of chamber musicians.
