Abstract

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is an important endocrine disorder in humans and animals, developing due to insulin deficiency or resistance to the effect of insulin, causing disturbances in carbohydrate, fat and protein metabolism, characterized by polyuria, polydipsia, polyphagia, weight loss, fatigue due to hyperglycemia, etc. clinical symptoms. In studies conducted on diabetic patients in the field of human medicine, the presence of ventricular dysfunction has been detected in patients who do not have a potential cause to predispose to coronary artery disease, hypertension and other cardiovascular diseases. The disorders caused by DM on the heart are expressed as diabetic cardiomyopathy (DCM).DCM is characterized by diastolic dysfunction, myocardial dilatation and decreased left ventricular function and is one of the important causes of morbidity and mortality in diabetic patients.Based on this prevalence result in human medicine, studies and researches on diabetic cardiomyopathy have been started in the field of veterinary medicine in recent years. The aim of this review is to provide information about DCM in cats and dogs, to examine and emphasize the relationship between diabetes mellitus and heart diseases, to increase the number of studies in this field and to draw attention to the need to add cardiac examination to routine controls in practice.
