VOCALIC CHANGES IN A WORD AS A DEMONSTRATION OF SENSORY MASKING

Journal Title: Scientific journal «International Journal of Philology» - Year 2015, Vol 1, Issue 215

Abstract

The theme of such a neurophysiologic phenomenon as sensory masking is continued in this article. The consequences of this phenomenon in a sound word evolution are examined. New explanation for the word‘s sound mutability is given. It is proved that the alternations of a vowel are the result of sensory masking. The formula and rules of vocalic transitions in Indo-European root are deduced: t І→А = t I→E + t Е→A or t A→U = t A→О + t O→U, where t means the time of alternation forming. The formula should be read in this way: origin of alternation І/А is sure to realize statistically and geo-historically via appearance of alternation of adjacent vowels І/Е and Е/А, 24 which has existed for some time; or alternation of far phonemes in Helvah triangle comes into being later and via alternation of adjacent vowels which has sprung up at first. The following strict rules emerge from this formula: If an alternation of far phonemes (in a triangle) exists in some Indo-European root, a variant with a middle (transitive) phoneme must exist, and its relics must be found either in the diachrony of this language, or in related languages, or in dialects, or in unrelated languages that have borrowed this root. If an alternation of far phonemes (in a triangle) within the same root does not occur, the primary vowel phoneme is only at the initial stage of its variability, and its main allophone enters in alternation with its other allophones or shades, or with adjacent (neighboring) phonemes of triangle. These rules and formula are confirmed by abundance of specific examples from Ukrainian, Russian, German, and other Indo-European languages.
