VOWEL VARIATION IN THE YOUTH’S SPEECH

Abstract

The present study is dedicated to gender peculiarities of vowel variation in the English youth’s speech. English vocalism is one of the most significant objects of linguistic analysis because this part of phonological system is characterized by high degree of variation and mobility all through the evolution of the English language. Youth’s pronunciation is an index of the level of development, interests, tastes and requirements of young people. The speech of British youth differs from the adults’ by specific sounding, melody, style of speech and selection of new words. Women are considered leaders of language innovations and their pronunciation tendencies can be considered promising in the development in the whole phonetic system. The conducted research, that main method of which is the auditory analyses showed that innovations in the female speech behavior is expressed in the more close realization of the vowel /ж/, in the more distinctly expressed forward position of vowel /u/, in centralization of the long vowel /і:/ and in strong widening of the vowels /ɔ:/ and /і/. Male group informants showed variability in realization of almost all vowels using less standard pronouncing language forms. Pronunciation tendencies of male group can be distinguished as an indicator of vowel system development in the speech of young Englishmen.
