Abstract
In Struggle with Life, or “a natural and social history of a family”. Bolesław Prus’ Prolegomena to Naturalism The article deals with Bolesław Prus’ early short story entitled In Struggle with Life (W walce z życiem), which was published in 1877 in „Kurier Warszawski”. In this work of purpose Prus was trying to apply the basic elements of naturalistic anthropology and social theory: heredity and social determinism. The plot of In Struggle with Life was based on the history of a Polish aristocratic family, which were doomed to extinction. Prus’s concept of naturalism was probably influenced by Émile Zola’s novels. The Polish writer intended to intervene in the social order of the time. First of all, he condemned various of social prejudices.
