WEAR TESTING OF DLC COATINGS WITH FRICTION COUPLE „BALL-ON-DISK”

Journal Title: Tribologia - Year 2010, Vol 232, Issue 4

Abstract

A method for tribological testing of DLC coatings was developed. The method is based on “ball-on-disk” tests and ex–post inspection by optical microscopy for qualitative and quantitative determination of the specimen wear. A DLC coated stainless (AISI 440-C steel) ball (Ø 10 mm) is sliding under load on a DLC coated face of stainless (3H13 steel) rotating disk. The method is based on the adapted TST-1 rotating sliding tribometer. Ultra thin coatings were tested, particularly DLC modified with chromium or titanium additive. Sliding contacts were lubricated either with distilled water or with an aqueous solution of NaCl. Tests were carried out under the following conditions: - Sliding velocity constant, 0.08 m/s; - Mean radius of friction path 7 mm; - Lubricant bath temperature ambient temperature; and, - Nominal surface pressure (Hertz theorem) 1 GPa. The course of wear of the DLC coating deposited on the specimen was evaluated quantitatively by optical microscope photography. The amount of wear was assessed as the surface area of the wear mark on the spherical specimen. The kinetics of wear was analysed as the wear mark surface area versus time (i.e. sliding distance). Good curve fitting for experimental data was obtained for the example with a logarithmic fit. The experimental data are indicative of better wear resistance of DLC modified with titanium than DLC modified with chromium; whereas, the NaCl content in water considerably accelerates of wear process.
