Who was countess Dorothea von Helfenstein? A contribution to the genealogy of the Kurzbach and the Helfenstein families in the 15th century

Journal Title: Przegląd Nauk Historycznych - Year 2017, Vol 0, Issue 3

Abstract

The purpose of the article was to explain the origin of Sigismund von Kurzbach (died 1513), the first baron on Milicz and Żmigród (Trachenberg), and his wife, Dorothea von Helfenstein. On the basis of a wide source query and a detailed analysis of the literature on the subject, the author established that Zygmunt von Kurzbach came from Wielkopolska and was a descendant of the well known Korzbok family. His parents were Piotr Korzbok from Witków and Ludmiła Głębocka from Głęboczek, daughter of Piotr, castellan of Rogoźno. Much more problems arose in connection with establishing the origin of Dorothea von Helfenstein. After a thorough analysis of documents related to the history of the Counts von Helfenstein family, the author came to the conclusion that Countess Dorothea was the youngest daughter of Konrad II von Helfenstein-Blaubeuren. Her mother was the second wife of count Konrad, Urszula von Seckendorff-Rinhofen. Early orphaned by her parents, she came under the care of the Brandenburg elector and the margrave of Ansbach, Albrecht III Achilles. It is highly probable that Sigismund Korzbok from Witków, an envoy of the king of Bohemia Władysław II Jagiellon, met his future wife, countess Dorothea von Helfenstein, during one of his visits to the Hohenzollerns court.
