Wiedza i poezja w „Życiu” Zenona Przesmyckiego (Miriama)
Journal Title: Wiek XIX. Rocznik Towarzystwa Literackiego im. Adama Mickiewicza - Year 2017, Vol 0, Issue 0
Abstract
Zenon Przesmycki (Miriam) in 1887 embraced the editorial of the new weekly, Warsaw “Życie” and intended to work to raise the level of poetry in cultural, intellectual and social life. In addition to the publication of poetry works on a larger scale than in previous periodicals, his aim was to be achieved by a deepened thought on poetry in its relations with other areas of life, especially with science. According to the editor, as a consequence of positivism and scientism, poetic expression came under the influence of disintegrating forces. On the other hand, he did not doubt that science presented a poetry-forming value. Such assumptions are inspired by critical literary criticism and the reviewer’s practice in the magazine. Science is the inspiration for the Parnassian experiments appearing here, and the issue of knowledge is also sometimes directly related to the subject of poetry in “Życie”.
