Wkład społeczeństwa ziemi sokołowskiej w dzieło odzyskania niepodległości

Journal Title: Rocznik Kolbuszowski - Year 2018, Vol 18, Issue 18

Abstract

The history of the national liberation movement in the district of Sokołów is as long as the efforts made to defend and then to regain independence for Poland. The inhabitants of the district mentioned above supported the November and January insurgents. At the turn of the 20th century, national celebrations and popular lectures played a vital role in shaping civic attitudes. In addition, the Gymnastics Society ‘Sokół’, established in Sokołów in 1894, conducted patriotic activities. In 1912 the unit of Riflemen’s Association was established in the town. During World War I several dozen volunteers enlisted in the Józef Piłsudski Legions; some of them were killed in battles. The contribution of the Sokołów community towards regaining independence also encompassed cultural and social initiatives. In 1916 the Shield of the Legions, preserved to this day, was funded. The legionnaires and orphans who lost their fathers in battles were given financial support and aid in kind. Some funds were also transferred to the national treasury.
