Women’s experiences of vaginal examinations during labour<br />

Abstract

[b]Objective:[/b] To describe the women’s perception of vaginal examination during labor. [b]Design:[/b] Transverse and analytical study. [b]Setting:[/b] Mother-Infant Teaching National Hospital San Bartolomé. [b]Patients:[/b] Postpartum women attended in gynecological service in October, 2006. [b]Interventions: [/b]The patients solved a self-administered and structured questionnaire based in 20-item Likert-type scale and a scale that asked about the performance of the health professionals. [b]Main outcome measures: [/b]Notional satisfaction index and perception of the medical performance.[b] Results: [/b]107 women participated of the study. The notional satisfaction index was 61.3%. 19.6% was “more than satisfied” with the experience of the vaginal examination, 65.4% were “Satisfied” and 15.0% was “less than satisfied”. Regarding the perception of the medical performance, it was an average store of 6.72±2.28. [b]Conclusions: [/b]85% was “satisfied” or “more than satisfied” with the experience of their vaginal examination during labor. Besides, women qualified as a good performance the medical examination during labor. It was observed that most of the women accept the vaginal examination, when the procedure is explained.
