WORSENINGOF THE POLISH-UKRAINIAN CONFRONTATION ATTHE TURN IN GALICIA OF THE XIX – XX CENTURIES

Abstract
The policy of «new era», proposed by K. Badeni with a purpose of normalization of relations between the Poles and the Ukrainians in Galicia, ended in fiasco. The issues of school education in the Ukrainian language, establishment of the Ukrainian-speaking university in Lviv, discriminatory electoral legislation in regard to the Ukrainians, and even train tickets as one of the language aspects, induced a great tension and even open opposition. We have examined rea-sons and course of this conflict, analyzed a historiography of the issue and determined a place occupied by the Galician governors who were the Poles by their nationality. «The Spring of the Nations» awoke and rive of people, residing in the Austrian Empire, to defend their own interests with the purpose of self-determination. A rise of confrontation between the Poles and the Ukrainians was inevitable in this situation, especially in Eastern Galicia. The richest Polish population had better possibilities to make use of the principle of national and cultural autonomy, proclaimed by the government and later occupied key positions in the regional administration; among other things they delegated their representative to a position of governor of Galicia who possessed sufficiently great powers of Galicia. The central government, which used manipulations in their own interests, derived benefit of the Polish-Ukrainian opposition too.
