WRECK WM-1 FROM NIEMEN RIVER, LITHUANIA

Abstract
In 80’s XXth century in Merkiné (Lithuania), near one of island on the Niemen River, plank-boat’s wreck was discovered. In the summer 2001, researchers from Department of Underwater Archaeology, Institute of Archaeology at Nicolaus Copernicus University in Torun (Poland), excavated boat’s wreck (so-called WM-1) from Merkiné at Kulturos Vertybių Apsaugos Departamentas’s request. From wreck 770 cm long and 221 cm wide were preserved 9 planks, 4 floor-timbers, mast-step and 66 pins. They were documented and were transported to Vilnius, where they were conserved. At this year were penetrated also two lakes, where were found five piles of the unknown construction.
