Yield structure of selected varieties of white mustard grown as main crops and their impact on the potato cyst nematode (Globodera rostochiensis). II. Above-ground and root biomass production and potato cyst nematode density in soil

Journal Title: Rośliny Oleiste - Oilseed Crops - Year 2013, Vol 34, Issue 1

Abstract

Field studies carried out on light loamy sand in 2008–2010 were aimed to compare fresh and dry yields of above-ground and root biomass and antinematode (Globodera rostochiensis) effect of ten white mustard varieties: Accent, Bamberka, Bardena, Barka, Concerta, Metex, Nakielska, Radena, Rota and Sirola grown as the main crop. The varieties significantly differed in both yields and anti-nematode activity. The biggest above-ground biomass (both fresh and dry) was produced by the Accent variety and by Concerta, Bardena and Radena. In the case of roots the order was: Accent, Radena, Bardena and Concerta. Above-ground plant yields were proportional to plant heights. The total fresh mass yield of white mustard corresponded to 51–71% of the mean dose of cattle manure (35 t•ha-1) applied under potatoes. All examined white mustard varieties limited the density of potato cyst nematodes in the soil. Most pronounced reduction of potato cyst nematodes was observed for Bardena, Rota, Accent, Sirola and Radena varieties. The years of studies influenced the investigated parameters of yielding. The least important antinematode effect was recorded in the year 2010 of the highest nematode density in soil and the smallest root yield of white mustard.

The results of field trials with winter oilseed rape are biased by the effects of competition between plants growing on adjacent plots. We tried to remove the impact of these effects using analysis of regression. The pro...
