Zmiana społeczna i jednostka we współczesności
Journal Title: Przegląd Socjologiczny - Year 2016, Vol 0, Issue 3
Abstract
For many reasons social change constitutes one of the most important, but also internally differentiated, fields of research in modern sociology. It is assumed that this broad field of research is composed of three areas of investigations. The first concerns the structural determinants of social change. The second is focused on the mechanisms of change. And the third deals with the results or effects of social change. The analysis presented in this article concentrates upon the effects of social change as significant factors that, during the recent decades, have influenced the status and the existential parameters of life of an individual during. In the face of the theoretical and methodological differentiation of studies in the domain of the effects of social change, the analysis takes into consideration the findings from three main research perspectives. The first, exemplified by the studies of R. Inglehart and the World Values Survey team, points out the substantial change of the value systems of younger generations. The second perspective, developed mainly by A. Giddens and U. Beck, explores the consequences of the processes of “radicalization of modernity”. At the centre of the third perspective is the thesis that the western societies have entered the period of profound and rapid economic and social transformations. These transformations – it is supposed – will lead in the near future to “the end of the world as we know it” as expressed by I. Wallerstein in the title of his book.
