Abstract

Source materials for history of Polish education on the territory of Western Krai in collections of the National Library of Russia in St Petersburg Due to geopolitical conditions, Polish educational system in Western Krai was dependent on the Russian Empire. It is immediately obvious that research of this issue must involve the archives on the territory of the former Russian Empire, especially in the last capital of the tsar’s country – Saint Petersburg. Historical records stored there are valuable, as they include documents of the central educational authority. The most significant archives related to schooling are preserved in the Russian State Historical Archive in St Petersburg. National Library of Russia holds incomparably fewer documents. When undertaking research of Polish education in Western Krai, it is necessary to reach out for fond 18 – so called Anastasiewicz Fond. Anastasiewicz, in 1803–1810, was the secretary of prince Adam Jerzy Czartoryski, the chief education officer of the Vilnius Academic District. The fond contains 561 archival units (archival reference numbers – works) pertaining to years 1755–1846. The Anastasiewicz Fond comprises diaries, notes, his own works, collected records, poems, and most of all, correspondence containing the most information about educational matters. Another important fond of the National Library of Russia in St Petersburg, deserving attention, is fond 550, archival reference numbers F.XVIII 3/1, 3/2, 2/1 and 2/2. This unit is the book of incoming letters of the registrar’s office of prince Adam Jerzy Czartoryski. The documents are related to his early activity as the chief education officer of the Vilnius Academic District. It has to be assumed that many undiscovered historical records concerning the history of Polish education on the territory of Western Krai still remain in the National Library of Russia in St Petersburg.
