Abstract

After the first partition of Poland there were 36 monasteries and 4 related residences within the Austrian monarchy. Since 1780 they created a monastic province dedicated to the Saviour. As a result of Joseph’s reforms, the number of monasteries fell down to 14 in the 19th century. The number of monks went down from 314 to 59 within 1780–1881. Life in a monastery was sub- jected to the monastic requirements prescribing canonical hours, which dictated the schedule of activities during the day. Everyday existence depended mostly on housing conditions. One of the major concern of everyday existence was food, which was often the subject of complaints. Regular meals in a monastery included dinner and supper. Secular cooks were employed in some monasteries. The provision of proper garments was the responsibility of monastery’s authorities, which paid monks a sum of money for this purpose.
