Abstract
This article studies the re-use of the literary representation of the medieval past, with the purpose of considering the presence of cultural and historic (medieval) elements transformed, adapted and fictionalised in José de Alencar’s novel O sertanejo (1876), to reach the central subject of our study: the use (or the approach) to the knight’s ethical code in the drawning of the novel’s main character. We are based on medievalists (Jacques Le Goff, Franco Cardini, Robert Delort) and on literature specialists (Ernst Robert Curtius, Erich Auerbach). We take three elements of that ethical code: the loyalty to the Sire, the fidelity and devotion to the loved woman and the Christian fidelity to God and to the poor people.
