Abstract

Abstract Meskhetian Turks were subjected to forced migration twice throughout their history and were never able to return to their homeland. Although there are different ideas about the roots of the Meskhetian Turks living in the Meskhetian region of the Caucasus, the majority believe that they are based on the Kipchak Turks and that they were under the influence of the Oghuz Turks in the 11th century. Meskhetian Turks, who are Sunni Muslims, lived under the rule of the Ottoman Empire for approximately 250 years. The Meskhetians, who later lived under Russian rule, were also exposed to Georgian chauvinism. Meskhetian Turks, who were subjected to forced exile in 1944 during the Soviet Union period, were exiled to the Fergana valley and started to live there. Their efforts to return to their homeland became impossible as Georgians settled in the places left behind by them, and they were forced to emigrate for the second time after the conflicts with the Uzbeks in 1989. They migrated to different regions of Russia, most of them to Azerbaijan. The events of 1989 were discussed from different perspectives in newspapers with different ideologies in the Turkish press. More importantly, it is understood from the newspaper articles that no one in Turkey has any information about who the Meskhetian Turks are. Meskhetian Turks began to be researched and known after 1989 in the Turkish media, which did not even have an idea of how they should be named.
